Labu or Jack ‘o’ Lantern

Assalamualaikum Yeops and Yongs! Greetings!

Hello again , sorry for the delayed entry.  towards year end there’s a lot of other commitments and last minute year resolution which didn’t came up to materialize. Of course , you need to have a plan for execution and not for perfection.  Don’t wait for perfect moment – just get it movingggg!!!

Ok for this post edition, I’m going to write about ‘labu’ or pumpkin .  For most of us city folks, we tend to think pumpkin is similar to potatoes, which is grown underground.  Pumpkin’s scientific name Cucurbita Pepo.  It has thick outer layer , pulp and seeds.  Seeds when it is dried, it became another favorite snack known as ‘kuaci’ or melon seed.

If you can’t see it that’s ok because neither could I.   I pass these kind of bushes in Perak – without noticing that there’s pumpkin in the vicnity. Now that I know – I’ll be more

This is still a new pulp and it has yet to be fully developed pumpkin.  Give another 3-4 weeks, you’ll see the petals dropped and the pulp become larger.  After few weeks of patience, you will be ready to pluck this from the attached stalk and be ready to turn one pumpkin to a different type of dishes and fill your appetite.

You will be wondering about what can we do with labu or pumpkin? What can you do with pumpkin for our local cuisine?

1. Labu masak lemak ( Grease Pumpkin gravvy) .

   

   This dish goes along well with rice and with any other side dish. Caution : over consumption may caused drowsiness and late afternoon nap. Ha ha ha.

2.  Lepat Labu ( Wrapped steamed smashed pumpkin)

   

   3.  Cucur Labu ( Fried Smash Pumpkin)

   

    

   Cucur Labu is nice to be consumed with afternoon tea or while hanging out with friends and relatives who came visiting.

Well there you go ! Three different type of dishes you can do with pumpkin and next time keep an eye over the bushes and you will see it there ..on the ground just next to your feet.
